the waltz of deception

A waltz from an opera has been running through my head. It has a certain sadness (minor chords) and I'm sure it has something to do with cheating, deception, disillusionment. Still, it's very catchy. I wish I had the technical expertise to hum it here and ask if anyone can identify the opera & the context.

WHY, why, why do some readers complain that my female characters are passive & colorless when I intend them to be 1) wrestling with a dilemma, 2) diplomatic and trying to function as go-betweens between 2 or more opposing sides, or 3) too desperate or depressed to give much of a shit at the moment?  None of this fits my conception of "passive," though #3 comes closest to it.  I posted my mildly BDSM  f/f/f "splosh" story, "Ariadne's Thread," on "Storytime" on the Erotic Readers & Writers list, and someone said that Ariadne is too passive to care about because she lets 2 other women do terrible things to her. Heh - they are her friends, they have a creative plan to cheer her up and fend off the Evil Fate that seems to be dogging her, and she knows this. I'm not sure if it's worthwhile to explain this, knowing that anything I say in defense of my story is likely to seem like a sign of touchiness & inability to accept crits.

On the other hand, accepting an interpretation that seems out to lunch really would fit my conception of passive. I would like to know how other writers handle this.

Tomorrow morning (9:00 a.m. on a Saturday!), I have roughly 30 minutes to sprint through "Rights & Wrongs: Harry Potter Goes to Court" - my proposed talk on all the legal cases involving the Harry Potter books. I hope people ask questions later, since I can't do justice (as it were) to the topic in the little window of time I was given.

Tomorrow is Harry Potter Day (9:00-5:00) on the "old campus" - venerable buildings that are said to be haunted.  Darke Hall, the auditorium where I will give my talk, has at least 3 verified ghosts according to the TV series "Creepy Canada". Check it out:

I feel as if I need something eye-catching, like a pet owl on my shoulder. :~)

Recovery by C.B. Potts

This tale has an homey taste. Adam is returning home from Iraq after spending the last two years far from home. Probably when he signed in soon after high school, he really didn't understand what he would do and see. And reality was maybe too much for a now nearly twenty-one years old guy. Again at home he has lost all the link he had with his previous life, and the links he has made on army seem to disappear one at home: Tom, the man that has shared a secret love affair with him abroad, is now ready to marry and get pregnant his girlfriend.

Adam is hurt but he also doesn't have an idea of what he wants to do in the future. After some not so happy discussions with his father, he decides to go away for a season, helping an old family friend to renovate an hunting resort. Calvin is a lonely man, older than Adam (he is of Adam's father age) but still handsome. And for a man like Adam, without reasons in his life, helping and loving Calvin can be a nice way to spend the days. What they have to understand is if this will be only a seasonly thing or if Adam has fully recovered from his depression, and he is ready to start again with something completely new.

As I said I like the taste of this novel. It's totally peaceful, in fully contrast with the war that Adam has escaped. Also the love between Calvin and Adam is nice and quiet: it's not a sudden flame, but it's a everlasting fire, something that will always be there for Adam.

The author tell us the story of a man who looses everything and finds more than he lost.

Bouncer's Folly (Zara’s Bois 3) by Gracie C. McKeever

Of the three on the Zara's Bois series I read, this one is maybe my favourite.

Zara has been a good girl in her last mission, and so her angels want to reward her: she will return on Earth, her soul in the body of another lost soul who left too soon. What they didn't say to Zara is that her new body is a male one, and when Zara reawakens in the arms of sexy bouncer Ramsey, also another part of Zara's body awakens, a part she isn't used to have!

But Zara is a girl of many means, and she plays all the better she can with what she have. And the fact that Ramsey is very attracted by Trevor, the twinkie in which body Zara is now, is a plus: Zara will finally have the man she is attracted, since this time she has the right body! Only that Trevor was a drugs addicted and his old friends are not all willing to leave him alone. And then there is also the problem of Travis, Trevor's twin, that understands since the first time they meet, that the soul inside Trevor's body is not his brother's one.

I like how the author manages Zara's transition from woman to man: since she awakens, Zara thinks and acts like a woman, but the first time she has sex with Ramsey, and she fully understand the difference between a woman and a man (with a first hand experience), she stops to be an "her" to become an "him".

I think this is the last in the series, unless the author wants to tell the story also of Travis (who is straight for now) and Trevor (who has the "little" problem to not having a material body in this moment...). All the story till now were a bit short, this one is less than 80 pages, but pretty original.

Cinema night (headdesk headdesk)

It makes me feel bad when I see just how much Lili loves sunny days. She's from Spain originally, my sister had her shipped over when she was a year old and she's never really acclimatised. She spends - literally - October to April squashed up against the radiator and when the sun does finally crawl back into the sky she follows it around the house basking in every inch of sunbeam that she can find. It's just gone out of the sitting room, so she's charged upstairs to find some more.

Just got back from the cinema and I made a rather embarrassing and typically stupid mistake. Read more... )

And really. two things: 1. When the shit hits the fan, London - do you really think Boris is going to leap into action? Yes. Dick Whittington WOULD be turning. IN HIS GRAVE.

and 2. Gordon Ramsey's fruit and veg idea.... *shakes head* why do chefs not just bleeding COOK. Why must they all have a bandwagon, or a headline popping gimmick plz?

When life hands you stress...

...watch Spongebob.

It's the first time I've laughed to the point of tears in about a week, and it's all because of ONE line from Patrick:

"Fishy go bye-bye."

Gossip Again! since Jules said that it's a social community work I'm doing...

In one of the comment on my last "Gossip" post, [info]debbie1701 pointed me to this youtube: it's a scene from an american series, a prime tv, "Brothers and Sisters" where a gay man makes a marriage proposal to his lover; Debbie said that for her is the first time she has seen something like that in an american television. Truth be told, the scene is very sweet:

And today I read on [info]slashislove's livejournal that Luke MacFarlane who plays Scotty Wandell on Brothers & Sisters, came out to Toronto's The Globe and Mail newspaper in an article published today.

In 2006 MacFarlane made news for his alleged relationship with the star of Grey's Anatomy T. R. Knight, while in 2007 has been linked to Wentworth Miller of Prison Break.

Is this a case where play gay in a fiction allow to a public man to coming out? Another reason to like this type of fiction!

Icons

It has been a busy week.  Ethan has gained 10 ounces in 2 weeks. We can tell he has gotten longer too.  His little premie onesies are starting to stretch just a little.

We have only one more 1400 dollar payment and the cruise is completely paid for.  Hawaii here we come.  Should be paid for by the end of this month.  Then I start shopping.  I have a whole list of stuff I want to buy.

I have icons, I have been playing around some more with textures and gradients.  So I have icons and my new header.
